CALENDAR

The city's Downtown Special Events Commission is teaming up with the Downtown Alliance Revitalization Association and its local merchants to offer various events in the downtown area of public interest.

Annual public events include a community tree lighting in December, Juneteenth celebration in June, Friday night concerts during the summer months, the Alliance Farmers' Market from June through October, annual Carnation Festival in August, Main Street Stroll in September

That's a Fact . . .

Dr. Levi Lamborn presented a Lamborn Red carnation to his political opponent William McKinley before each of their series of debates for the 18th congressional seat. The lapel flower became McKinley's good luck charm, and he consistently wore one at all times when he became president. Moments after presenting the one from his lapel to a young admirer on Sept. 14, 1901, he was killed by an assassin's bullet.
